End of LEADER 2007-2013 grants scheme

Having awarded almost £3m to more than 80 community projects across the Outer Hebrides, the LEADER Innse Gall 2007-2013 community grants programme are unable accept further applications – after allocating the remainder of its funding to the final eight projects earlier this month. Following announcement of the imminent closure of the Programme the Local Action Group received a large volume of interest and applications from a range of diverse and original projects – thus making their decision on the final allocation even harder. Extra sailings to beat Olympic travel restrictions

Ferry operator Caledonian MacBrayne (CalMac) is planning to run extra sailings between the Western Isles and Skye to allow local produce extra time to reach the South of England and negotiate road and security restrictions imposed by the Olympic Games. The extra sailings will operate between Lochmaddy and Uig on Mondays and Wednesdays for seven weeks between 23 July and 5 September, following representations from the Western Isles Fishermen’s Association (WIFA) which was concerned that delays reaching markets would affect the freshness of their catches and potentially lead to lost business. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is launching a major community consultation which will help set the strategic priorities for the Comhairle for the next five years. The “Working Together for the Next Five Years” consultation gives partners and members of the public the chance to comment on the Comhairle’s strategy going forward, looking at key areas such as population, schools, housing and the economy.
