The tugs, based in the Western Isles and Shetland, are due to be removed from their stations by the end of March. Councils from the affected areas did not receive any commitment to retain the two tugs when they met Michael Moore, Secretary of State for Scotland, on Thursday. The UK Government withdrew funding for four Scottish emergency towing vessels (ETVs) in September last year, in a bid to make annual savings of more than £30m. The tugs in the north were given a last minute reprieve late last year, when they were granted an interim contract until March 31. Mr Moore discussed alternative arrangements with council representatives and campaigners at the meeting in Edinburgh. ...
