Weather theme for Museum Nan Eilean young people’s project

Are you aged 16-24 year olds and interested in music, dance, photography, animation, museums or the weather?  Museum nan Eilean are working in partnership with National Museums Scotland on a creative project aimed at young people.  The theme of the project is Sense of Place and we are specifically looking at how Weather affects our sense of place.  This new project called Scotland Creates has been funded through Esmee Fairbairn and Creative Scotland will allow young people to work with the landscape and the collections of NMS and MnE to creatively explore the theme of weather. An exhibition curated from the young people’s work and the collections of NMS and MnE will be on display in Sgoil Lionacleit from 28 June until 28 September showcasing the Outer Hebrides weather. Salty taste of success for Natalie

An Outer Hebrides entrepreneur who seized the opportunity to realise her dreams of running her own businesses was overall winner at this year’s Moffat Travel and Tourism Awards in Glasgow yesterday. Natalie Crayton, 30, (pictured right) Managing Director of Hebridean Sea Salt picked up the Economic and Community Impact award and a £1500 cash prize. The awards, which are now in their sixth year, are run by The Prince’s Trust Youth Business Scotland (YBS) thanks to generous support from The Moffat Charitable Trust which has pledged almost £300,000 to support young people demonstrating outstanding talent in the Scottish tourism and travel industry.Natalie’s business has grown thanks to support from YBS which helps 18-30 year olds start up and continue to grow their own businesses by providing vital financial support and guidance from experienced business mentors. Isles nurse is Dementia Champion

Western Isles staff nurse, Nicola Libby (pictured) recently graduated as a Dementia Champion, alongside over 200 healthcare and social services professionals from across Scotland.   Nicola, who works in Surgical Ward, Western Isles Hospital, was part of the third cohort of Scotland’s Dementia Champions Programme.   The Dementia Champions Programme is closely associated with the establishment of Alzheimer Scotland Nurse Specialists/Consultants across all NHS Boards in Scotland. Together, these roles support Health Boards to bring about improvements in the experiences and outcomes of care and treatment for people with dementia in acute hospital settings.   Cabinet Secretary for Health and Wellbeing, Alex Neil MSP, was the keynote speaker at Nicola’s recent graduation in Edinburgh.     ...

Fury as NHS spends £5M on taxis to ferry patients around Scotland

27 Apr 2013 07:24 DAMNING figures have been obtained through freedom of information but some health chiefs claim cabs may be the only option of transport in some cases. HEALTH chiefs have been accused of running a chauffeur service after it emerged they spent more than £5million on taxis for patients. One health board – NHS Ayrshire and Arran – splashed out almost £1.9million on private taxis since 2007. NHS Highland paid £1.14million in cab fares for the same period. But neither would reveal how much of the total went on ferrying patients. NHS Lanarkshire admitted they spent nearly £1million in five years ferrying patients by cabs. Whisky Galore bottles expected to attract attention from around the world as they go to auction

25 Apr 2013 18:04 THE two bottles of whisky were salvaged from the wreck of the ship SS Politician which sank in 1941 inspiring the book and film Whisky Galore. Whisky Galore Diver Bob Pert brings up bottles of whiskey the wreck of the sunken ship Daily Mirror TWO rare bottles of whisky salvaged from a shipwreck which inspired a book and film are to be auctioned. The collector's items were part of the cargo on the 8,000-ton cargo ship the SS Politician which sank off the shores of Eriskay in the Outer Hebrides in 1941 and inspired the book and film Whisky Galore. The bottles, which have documents of authentication, are to be sold as a pair by Britain's biggest internet-only auction site Scotch Whisky Auctions, based in Glasgow, with bidding opening...
