Scottish News: Elderly man and woman injured as gales blow over caravans

Sep 21 2011 AN elderly man and woman were taken to hospital after high winds wreaked havoc in a caravan park. The Fire and Rescue Service said at least nine caravans were blown over at a site in Ayrshire as westerly gusts blasted Scotland. Emergency services were called to the Ranch Caravan site in Maybole at around 12.20pm today. No-one was trapped and everyone was accounted for, Fire and Rescue officers said. The man and the woman were taken to Ayr Hospital by ambulance after suffering cuts, bruises and slight lacerations. Isles MSP backs shooting of geese

13 September 2011 Last updated at 09:22 The call comes amid requests from the RSPB for sightings of geese Shooting wild geese to control their numbers on the Western Isles has been supported by the islands' MSP. Skeins of thousands of greylag geese have been blamed for causing severe damage to grass and crops for years. Fireworks are provided to scare birds under the Uist Goose Management Scheme, whose backers include Scottish Natural Heritage and RSPB Scotland. But Alasdair Allan said a lot more could be done "by way of shooting to solve the problem". He made his call after seeing the goose management scheme in action. Highlands and Islands Labour MSP and Shadow Minister for Finance and Infrastructure, Rhoda Grant, has said she is “disgusted” at the apathy being displayed by Scottish Ministers towards solving broadband connection problems in rural areas. Scottish Labour has been pressing the SNP Government to invest in rural broadband since it came into power in 2007.  Telecoms industry leader, BT, has also expressed fears that island communities will lose out on broadband connections unless the Scottish Government makes urgent investment.  The infrastructure to deliver broadband to rural areas needs vast improvement and community solutions need to be adopted to bring ‘last mile’ connections to some of Scotland’s remotest rural communities.
