22 November 2012 Last updated at 11:26 It is claimed Northern's policing approach came in useful during last year's London riots Community-style policing will continue in the new single Scottish police force structure, Northern Constabulary's chief constable has said. George Graham said he was also confident that this approach would survive in an increasingly challenging financial climate. Northern covers the Highlands, Western Isles and Northern Isles. The senior officer has made his comments in the latest edition of the force's magazine, Northern Light. Mr Graham said Northern Constabulary had started preparations for the transition to a single force. The new Police Service of Scotland will start on 1 April 2013. Scotland’s ‘Jersey Shore’ found

21 November 2012 Last updated at 10:17 North America's Jersey Shore was badly affected by Hurricane Sandy last month Beaches in parts of the Western Isles are an unusual type of island similar to those found off the US east coast, scientists have said. A study involving the universities of Aberdeen, Dundee, St Andrews and Ulster have identified areas of the Uists and Benbecula as barrier islands. In the US, the long strips of sand separated from the mainland by sea form Jersey Shore. The barrier islands were badly hit by Hurricane Sandy last month. Scientists involved in the Western Isles study said some beaches and also flat, coastal flower meadows called machair were of a similar geography to the US islands. Jersey Shore draws holiday-makers...

Review underway to determine case for special area of conservation (SAC) near Barra

20 Nov 2012 14:45 SACs are designated to protect rare and threatened species and habitats of European importance, including seals, reefs and sandbanks. AN INDEPENDENT review is to examine the scientific case for a proposed special area of conservation (SAC) in the Western Isles. Scottish Natural Heritage earlier held a public consultation inviting views on designating the Sound of Barra as an SAC. It recommended designation was needed because of the important marine species the area supports. The advice has now been received by environment minister Paul Wheelhouse alongside a report on the consultation which also included a number of individual objections. Mr Wheelhouse has now decided an independent expert review is to be conducted as part of the decision-...

Energy ‘risks’ to birds studied

20 November 2012 Last updated at 10:27 Researchers based in Thurso will examine potential risks to seabirds The potential effects of wave, tide and offshore wind energy projects on marine wildlife are "largely unknown", according to researchers. The Environmental Research Institute (ERI) in Thurso said the lack of knowledge was because the sector was still in its early stages. Researchers at ERI are focusing their research on potential threats posed to seabirds. They will create an index to show the species that are most at risk. ERI, which is part of the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI), has set out a summary of the research. The researchers said: "We are currently witnessing the rapid development of the marine renewable energy industry in Scotland. "However, owing to the early stages of existing developments and associated monitoring projects, the ecological effects of generating...
