The senior officer has made his comments in the latest edition of the force's magazine, Northern Light. The MV Flinderspirit became stuck on a small island off North Uist on its way from Sweden to Belfast. A coastguard tug was sent to the scene from Orkney as a precaution because the local tug had been withdrawn from duty on Saturday after funding for it ended. Mr Mundell said he was making the UK government aware of the situation. He told BBC Radio Scotland: "It's clear that there is a need for this service. "There is no other viable alternative to provide the...

‘Challenges’ to tugs cover remain

2 March 2012 Last updated at 09:30 Two emergency tugs cover the west coast and Northern Isles Further meetings are to be held between four councils and the UK government about the future of two emergency tugs covering Scottish waters. Vessels hired to carry out coastguard duties around the UK coastline were withdrawn in 2011. But protests led to tugs returning to bases in Lewis and Shetland on a temporary basis until 31 March. Scotland Secretary Michael Moore said "challenges" remained to putting in place appropriate measures. He said a meeting with representatives from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council), Highland, Orkney and Shetland councils on Thursday was constructive. 'Good progress' Beyond 31 March, the oil and gas industry has offered to support the Maritime and Coastguard Agency by deploying its chartered vessels in emergencies off the Northern Isles. However, a long-term solution for the Western Isles and west Highlands had still to ...
