Dementia Support Centre Opens in Stornoway

LEWIS AND HARRIS Dementia Resource Centre opened today in Stornoway. The  newly refurbished centre, run by Alzheimer Scotland, was officially opened by HM Lord-Lieutentant of the Western Isles, Sandy Matheson OBE. Also in attendance were Angus MacNeil MP and Alzheimer Scotland Chief Executive Henry Simons. Mr Matheson said: “I welcome the opportunity to congratulate all those involved in providing our islands with such an excellent facility. “This will be of tremendous help and support to people with dementia, their carers and families who will have access to a wide range of services and activities. “This will make a big difference in helping them to live well with this illness.” Hugh Smith is a carer who receives support from the centre. Faults and Glitches Lead to Delays at Loch Carnan Windfarm

LOCH CARNAN wind farm in South Uist was officially handed over to the community on March 27, but it is not expected to reach full capacity for another two weeks due to ongoing problems. The project, spearheaded by Storas Uibhist, managers of the South Uist Estate, is set to deliver substantial returns for the community. But a motor fault led to one of the turbines being out of action for a week, and other problems included grid trips and reset failures. In addition to on-site glitches, there have been failures in communication links between the Loch Carnan site and a control facility in Perth. Comhairle agrees to campaigners’ demands to check and monitor Sound of Harris fish farm

Officers from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar  (CnES) have undertaken to visit a fish farm site in the Sound of Harris after a second feed barge was placed there without planning consent. The campaign group Outer Hebrides Against Fish Farms (OHAFF) asked CnES  to undertake a visit to the Loch Duart Ltd’s fish farm to check and monitor compliance within the terms of the original planning consent for the fish farm. The Comhairle’s commitment was made to OHAFF representatives during a meeting with planning officers last Thursday, (16th May 2013) at the Comhairle’s HQ in Stornoway organised to discuss Loch Duart Ltd’s installation of a second feed barge at the site without planning consent. Weather theme for Museum Nan Eilean young people’s project

Are you aged 16-24 year olds and interested in music, dance, photography, animation, museums or the weather?  Museum nan Eilean are working in partnership with National Museums Scotland on a creative project aimed at young people.  The theme of the project is Sense of Place and we are specifically looking at how Weather affects our sense of place.  This new project called Scotland Creates has been funded through Esmee Fairbairn and Creative Scotland will allow young people to work with the landscape and the collections of NMS and MnE to creatively explore the theme of weather. An exhibition curated from the young people’s work and the collections of NMS and MnE will be on display in Sgoil Lionacleit from 28 June until 28 September showcasing the Outer Hebrides weather. Medals for a centenary of service by Isles nurses

Four Western Isles community nurses, who have collectively worked the equivalent of more than 100 years as nurses for NHS Western Isles, this week received long service awards from the Queen’s Nursing Institute Scotland (QNIS).   Kathleen McCulloch, Community Lead Nurse; Dolly Maclean, Senior Charge Nurse, Eastside Team; Margaret Mackenzie, Senior Charge Nurse, Southside; and Marion Macdonald, Community Nurse/Midwife, Southside; were all presented with awards on Tuesday (May 14) to mark their long service for the NHS.   Awards are presented by QNIS to community nurses who have worked for over 21 years.
