22 November 2012 Last updated at 11:26 It is claimed Northern's policing approach came in useful during last year's London riots Community-style policing will continue in the new single Scottish police force structure, Northern Constabulary's chief constable has said. George Graham said he was also confident that this approach would survive in an increasingly challenging financial climate. Northern covers the Highlands, Western Isles and Northern Isles. The senior officer has made his comments in the latest edition of the force's magazine, Northern Light. Traffic delays and flooding alerts as Scotland is battered again by high winds and heavy rain

Review underway to determine case for special area of conservation (SAC) near Barra

20 Nov 2012 14:45 SACs are designated to protect rare and threatened species and habitats of European importance, including seals, reefs and sandbanks. AN INDEPENDENT review is to examine the scientific case for a proposed special area of conservation (SAC) in the Western Isles. Scottish Natural Heritage earlier held a public consultation inviting views on designating the Sound of Barra as an SAC. It recommended designation was needed because of the important marine species the area supports. The advice has now been received by environment minister Paul Wheelhouse alongside a report on the consultation which also included a number of individual objections.
