Wild fires rife in West Highlands

Wild fire at Strontian, Ardnamurchan. WILD fires have been affecting huge areas of the West Highlands with more than 80 wildfire incidents reported in the last three days. Ardnamuchan, Skye and the Western Isles have seen the grass, heather and heathland fires following the recent dry weather. More than 30 fire engines with over 150 firefighters have attended the numerous incidents. In some cases helicopters have also been drafted in to douse the flames. In Ardnamurch, at Eilean Shona fire crews from Fort William, Mallaig, Acharacle, Lochaline and Strontian battled a blaze for 16 hours. On Skye fire crews from Portree, Dunvegan, Staffin, Broadford and Kyle attended various fires. In the Western Isles fires affected North Uist, Benbecula, South Uist and Eriskay...

Murder trial adjourned

murder trial adjourned TWO men charged with the murder of a teenage boy in the Western Isles have had their trial adjourned. Johnathan MacKinnon (22) and Stefan Millar (21) are accused of killing 16 year-old Liam Aitchison in Steinish, Lewis on November 23 2011. Mountain rescue team joins copter search ex-Inverness pub landlord

Ewan Barras is still missing. A MAJOR search for an Inverness business man is continuing today after he vanished from his city home. A helicopter and mountain rescue team have also joined forces with the police to try and find Ewan Barras, who is the former landlord of The Phoenix pub on Academy Street and was last seen at 6.30am yesterday. The 46-year-old was reported missing by his wife Denise after he disappeared from his Milton of Leys home. Police carried out door-to-door inquiries close to his home on Sandalwood Crescent and an RAF Lossiemouth based search and rescue helicopter also joined the search last night. Another bin may be on the way to Inverness households

RESIDENTS and businesses in Inverness are to get yet another recycling bin, this time for food waste, but a veteran councillor has predicted deep public hostility to the introduction of the “absolutely ridiculous” new service. The recycling revolution in the Highlands, which has extended to paper, plastic, card and garden waste in recent years, is to be extended to discarded foodstuffs of all types in the city.
