Dozens of jobs lost at Highland haulage firm

Transport: Mackaskill Haulage has four depots across Scotland. Pic: © STV Forty-five jobs have been lost at Western Isles-based Mackasill Haulage. The employees were made redundant with immediate effect when receivers were called in on Wednesday. A small number of staff have been retained in the meantime to assist the receivers. Two representatives from KPMG flew to the island earlier in the week and toured the firm’s premises on Caberfeidh Road in the Newton industrial belt in Stornoway. Numerous island businesses are believed to have outstanding cash owed by the firm. Power cuts have been reported in Stornoway as wind speeds pick up through the day. An SSE spokesman was unable to confirm how widespread the power cuts are but said efforts are being made to restore supplies. All roads in the Highlands are affected by the wintry conditions and motorists are being advised to take care. Routes in the Caithness area are particularly badly affected by ice, police have warned.
