Busy week ahead

At least 18 vessels are anticipated to visit Stornoway this weekend as part of The Tall Ships Race 2011. Stornoway is a designated guest port for the event. Many of the ships are expected to be open to the public and big crowds are expected in Stornoway as the arrival of the Tall Ships co-incides with the Hebridean Celtic Festival and the Continental Market. Comhairle Leader Angus Campbell said: “This really is a spectacular summer for the Outer Hebrides – appropriately so in this Year of Scotland’s Islands of which the Tall Ships race is part. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is holding an online consultation to obtain views on a new flag design for the Western Isles. Exciting ‘Pipes and Strings’ concerts come to Uist

The Pipes & Strings tour follows on from the launch of the CD – Pipes & Strings.  The concert will feature “Suite for Alan” by Neil Johnstone, a piece commissioned by the National Piping Centre in 2009 to celebrate the music of the piper Duncan Johnstone, written for solo smallpipes, flute, whistle & strings. The concert will also include a performance of a specially commissioned work for the Scotland’s Islands project written by Stephen Adam for solo cello (Neil Johnstone) and strings, along with performances by Roddy MacLeod (Pipes), Allan MacDonald (Smallpipes) & Iain MacDonald (Flute & Whistles) and James Ross (Piano). The concerts will take place at St Peter’s Hall, Daliburgh at 1 p.m. on Wednesday 13th July and at 8 p.m. in Carinish Hall on the same day.
