Mundell to raise tugboat concerns

21 March 2012 Last updated at 09:45 The grounding of the Flinterspirit led to a tug being sent to the Minch from Orkney Scotland Office minister David Mundell has said some form of emergency cover is needed for west Scotland after a cargo vessel ran aground on Monday. The MV Flinderspirit became stuck on a small island off North Uist on its way from Sweden to Belfast. A coastguard tug was sent to the scene from Orkney as a precaution because the local tug had been withdrawn from duty on Saturday after funding for it ended. Pic: © STV A cargo ship ran aground on rocks in the Western Isles - but the emergency coastguard tug which could rescue it has been withdraw over funding cuts. The MV Flinterspirt went too close to the east side of North Uist while heading south down the Minch. The 4500-tonne Dutch bulk carrier was on its way to Belfast when the accident occured in a strong south west wind around 11pm on Monday. 19 March 2012 Last updated at 15:12 A funding package for the west coast tug has come to an end A tug providing coastguard cover off west Scotland has been withdrawn from duties after interim UK government funding for it ended. The vessel and another covering the Northern Isles were retained temporarily after other emergency tugs were withdrawn from service in 2011. The contract for the boat covering the west coast and Western Isles ran out on Saturday. Emergency towing vessel cover remains in place for Orkney and Shetland. Nov 30 2011 HUNDREDS of thousands of public sector workers in Scotland walked out today over proposed changes to their pensions. The vast majority of schools were closed and transport, hospitals, courts and other public services affected. The largest-scale strike in decades saw around two million people across Britain join together to protest against the UK Government's plans to increase the amount of money public sector workers pay into their pension, raise the retirement age and introduce career-average pensions.
