Row over chairmanship of new Crofting Commission

Click on image to enlarge. A strongly-worded attack has been launched against the Scottish government’s decision to appoint a chairman to the new Crofting Commission. Isles MSP Tavish Scott said a failure to allow crofting representatives to choose their own leader demonstrated a “command and control” strategy being exercised by the SNP. His comments came after the commission’s new representatives met the Holyrood environment minister Stewart Stevenson for the first time this week. In its submission to the Scottish government’s draft ferries plan, the SIC highlights that in peak season, the cost of two adults and two children travelling from Lerwick to Aberdeen and back with a car is £702.60. An equivalent family return trip between Stornoway and Ullapool costs just £135.40. Scottish civil servant Cheryl Murrie was in Lerwick for Friday morning’s development committee to update the SIC on the government’s draft ferries plan and the tendering process for the new north boats contract. Members ...

Wait goes on for duty rebate as fuel costs remain high

The long-awaited fuel duty rebate of five pence per litre for motorists could at last be just round the corner, with Europe expected to give the derogation the nod by the end of September. The move will provide a welcome relief for car drivers and businesses who have been forced to endure stubbornly high prices at the pumps. But renewed calls were made this week for the Office of Fair Trading to investigate the high rates motorists ...
