Review underway to determine case for special area of conservation (SAC) near Barra

20 Nov 2012 14:45 SACs are designated to protect rare and threatened species and habitats of European importance, including seals, reefs and sandbanks. AN INDEPENDENT review is to examine the scientific case for a proposed special area of conservation (SAC) in the Western Isles. It recommended designation was needed because of the important marine species the area supports. The advice has now been received by environment minister Paul Wheelhouse alongside a report on the consultation which also included a number of individual objections. Mr Wheelhouse has now decided an independent expert review is to be conducted as part of the decision-...

Jun 25 2012 ENDANGERED freshwater pearl mussels have been stolen from a Scottish island. Breeding colonies of the molluscs, which have protected status, were targeted in remote areas of Harris, in the Outer Hebrides, in the past week or so.
