Barra fishermen march on Holyrood

Residents on Barra, in the Western Isles, say plans to designate some of their fishing grounds special areas of conservation will hit the industry. Conservation agency Scottish Natural Heritage says sandbanks, reef and seal habitats need special protection. Local MSP and government minister Alasdair Allan opposes the move. Fishermen lock out invited guests

5 September 2011 Last updated at 14:27 The aims of the designation include protecting a rare coral reef Staff from Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) were invited to and then locked out of a meeting with fishermen. Three representatives had gone to the AGM of the Western Isles Fishermen's Association in Lochmaddy on North Uist. Islands fishermen have been angered by moves to designate an area of seabed as a Special Area of Conservation. Association members said they had decided SNH was not listening to them. SNH said it was disappointed its staff were barred from the weekend meeting. Last month, Scottish ministers approved plans to designate an area of seabed off East Mingulay, in the Western Isles, as a Special Area of Conservation. Allan responds to new Coastguard consultation

Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MSP Alasdair Allan has responded to the second consultation on the Maritime and Coastguard Agency’s proposals for modernisation of the coastguard. Alasdair Allan commented: ‘I was delighted, as I am sure everyone in the islands was, that the Maritime and Coastguard Agency have finally recognised the value of keeping both the Stornoway and Shetland Coastguard Stations open on a 24 hour basis. ‘I strongly supported this position in my consultation response. MP encourages flag design debate

Following an invitation to take part in a discussion on Radio nan Gaidheal yesterday regarding a flag for the Outer Hebrides, Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MP Angus Brendan MacNeil is encouraging people to take part in the consultation.  Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is currently running a consultation on the design of the flag and is keen to obtain views from members of the public. Consultation on proposals for crofting elections Plans to make the Crofters Commission more democratic and accountable have been unveiled today by Environment Minister Stewart Stevenson. The proposals recommend that the majority of the Crofters Commission, to be renamed the Crofting Commission from April 2012, should be elected by crofters. A consultation on the draft plans, which starts today, also covers the constituency boundaries for the elections and who should be eligible to vote.
