Fury as NHS spends £5M on taxis to ferry patients around Scotland

27 Apr 2013 07:24 DAMNING figures have been obtained through freedom of information but some health chiefs claim cabs may be the only option of transport in some cases. HEALTH chiefs have been accused of running a chauffeur service after it emerged they spent more than £5million on taxis for patients. One health board – NHS Ayrshire and Arran – splashed out almost £1.9million on private taxis since 2007. NHS Highland paid £1.14million in cab fares for the same period. But neither would reveal how much of the total went on ferrying patients. NHS Lanarkshire admitted they spent nearly £1million in five years ferrying patients by cabs. Other cash-strapped boards forked out six-figure sums on taxis – even though taxpayers already foot a £200million annual bill ...

19 Dec 2012 07:35 KAYLEE'S mum Lesley is backing moves for a sweeping change of the fatal accident inquiry system after finding that nothing has been done to enforce the sheriff's recommendations. THE mother of a teenage army cadet who drowned in a training accident wept yesterday as she attacked the way bereaved families are treated in death probes. Kaylee McIntosh, 14, died when she was pinned under a boat on Loch Carnan, South Uist, in the Outer Hebrides, in August 2007. The schoolgirl, from Fyvie in Aberdeenshire, was one of 34 cadets who took part in the three-boat exercise. Now, her heartbroken mum Lesley is backing a move by MSPs for sweeping changes to the fatal accident inquiry system. She was left “infuriated” by the FAI carried out into Kaylee’s death and...

Another bin may be on the way to Inverness households

RESIDENTS and businesses in Inverness are to get yet another recycling bin, this time for food waste, but a veteran councillor has predicted deep public hostility to the introduction of the “absolutely ridiculous” new service. The recycling revolution in the Highlands, which has extended to paper, plastic, card and garden waste in recent years, is to be extended to discarded foodstuffs of all types in the city. Containers to collect food will be sent out to every household and businesses in Inverness as Highland Council must comply with new legislation. It means residents who have gardens will have up to four separate recycling bins in a move slammed by Inverness councillor Norrie Donald who warned people would not bother to participate. “How ...
