Review of troubled marine plan

20 November 2012 Last updated at 11:55 Fishermen and conservationists have clashed over the planned designation for the Sound of Barra An independent review will examine the scientific case for a proposed special area of conservation (SAC) in the Sound of Barra in the Western Isles. Scottish Natural Heritage (SNH) said the designation was needed to protect rare and fragile marine life, a move supported by Conservationists. But fishermen and Rory MacNeil, chief of Clan MacNeil of Barra, fear SAC status will restrict fishing. The Scottish government said the review would guide its decision on the plan. The Scottish Wildlife Trust has backed the idea of making the Sound of Barra a special area of conservation (SAC), describing it as one of "Scotland's wildlife jewels". It said the area's sandbanks, reefs and harbour seal habitats need greater protection. There are 40 existing marine SACs in Scotland. Parliament...

8 February 2012 Last updated at 12:04 Minke whales are among the species the WDCS says need greater protection A wildlife charity has asked that a new network of Scottish marine protected areas (MPAs) have specific measures to protect whales and dolphins. 8 February 2012 Last updated at 02:08 Viewers of the BBC's Island Parish series have been following the controversy over the conservation measures Islanders who claim new conservation rules could put their economic future under threat are leading a protest at the Scottish Parliament. Residents on Barra, in the Western Isles, say plans to designate some of their fishing grounds special areas of conservation will hit the industry. Conservation agency Scottish Natural Heritage says sandbanks, reef and seal habitats need special protection. Local MSP and government minister Alasdair Allan opposes the move. For centuries, the fishermen of Barra have harvested the waters around their island and millions of people have become aware of the controversy because of the BBC series, Island Parish, which documents life in the southern Western Isles. The ...

RET to be extended to inter-island routes

Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MSP, Alasdair Allan, has today (29 November) welcomed the Scottish Government’s decision to make RET fares a long-term feature on ferries from the Western Isles to the Mainland and to roll the scheme out to the Sound of Harris and Sound of Barra ferries within the lifetime of the present Parliament. Alasdair Allan, who has been lobbying for this extension of the Road Equivalent Tariff (RET), commented: ‘The commitment to extend RET to the Sounds of Barra and Harris, goes well beyond the SNP’s commitments on RET in its 2011 ...

Social Services – Who Cares? An essay by ex-Uist and Barra Social Work Team Leader, Andrew Walker

An essay by ex-Uist and Barra Social Work Team Leader, Andrew Walker (The full text of Mr Walker’s report is available for download at the bottom of this abridged essay) I WRITE to register my concern about the insidious and worrying development arising from the re-organisation of adult social care services, especially in the Uist and Barra areas of the Comhairle nan Eilean Siar. Also, I fail to recognise the rationale behind some recent strategic policy decisions which do not acknowledge the increasingly complex needs of many service-users. The assessment and on-going review of service-user needs is a complex and skilled social work task, normally undertaken by trained, skilled and experienced social workers, registered with the Scottish Social Services Council. The appointment of unqualified social work staff to replace social workers, with the title of “Social Care Assessor”, is...
