Isles MSP backs shooting of geese

13 September 2011 Last updated at 09:22 The call comes amid requests from the RSPB for sightings of geese Shooting wild geese to control their numbers on the Western Isles has been supported by the islands' MSP. Skeins of thousands of greylag geese have been blamed for causing severe damage to grass and crops for years. Fireworks are provided to scare birds under the Uist Goose Management Scheme, whose backers include Scottish Natural Heritage and RSPB Scotland. But Alasdair Allan said a lot more could be done "by way of shooting to solve the problem". He made his call after seeing the goose management scheme in action. The scheme is run as part of a four-year project called Machair Life+ [1] . The SNP MSP's comments came as RSPB Scotland asked for reports of geese arriving for the winter. Sightings of pink-footed geese were received ...

Isles struggling with fire crews

23 August 2011 Last updated at 00:15 The report contains recommendations on fire cover from the Highlands and Islands The Isle of Muck could lose its community firefighting unit if difficulties recruiting enough people to deal with a blaze continue. Flotta in Orkney and Foula in Shetland, have also had problems with recruitment, according to Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue Service. Union leader calls for MCA management to resign over damning report

A call was made today for members of the MCA’s top management to resign in light of the transport committee’s damning report into streamlining proposals for the service. Treasurer of the Shetland branch of the PCS Union, Bob Skinley, said the plan to close either Lerwick or Stornoway station, leaving Aberdeen the one remaining full time station in Scotland, had been “completely trashed” by the MPs. His comments came as coastguard workers said they felt “vindicated” by the committee’s findings, which give support to alternative proposals put forward by operational coastguard officers. Mr Skinley said: “We hope that the MCA management will recognise the severity of the criticism of these proposals and do the honourable thing and withdraw them as soon as ...
