Job Description
The Assistant Archaeologist will support the efficient operation and development of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar’s Archaeology Service.
Based at Museum nan Eilean in Stornoway, you will assist the Comhairle’s Archaeologist in the provision of an integrated Archaeology Service across the islands, providing professional advice and guidance to statutory and non-statutory undertakers, other Comhairle Departments, Members and the public. You will also contribute to the wider historic environment agenda. You will be experienced and proficient and able to make independent decisions and represent the Comhairle at local and national meetings as required by the Comhairle’s Archaeologist. In particular, you will be responsible for the upkeep of the Sites and Monument Record and the provision of advice on strategic planning policies and on individual planning applications through the development control process. Occasionally you will be required to travel to other locations in the Outer Hebrides.
Requirements
You must have a Degree, or equivalent qualification, in Archaeology or a closely related subject. In addition, you must have full-time experience in UK archaeology and significant involvement in archaeological fieldwork, and proven experience in Local Government Historic Environment consultation processes. A current driving licence is essential.
Fixed term contract for two years.
